Last Layer
Finally, it was time to restore the 8mm thick layer. It was possible to make a bevel like in the case of veneer and, with a suitable offset from the previous layer, to glue the planki* “on the dash” because the 16mm of sheathing that was inside would have been sufficient reinforcement and connection.
BUT…
How to give a guarantee for a voyage around the world, how to make repairs in the best possible way, how conscience does not allow to go the straighter way when such a winding one is more appropriate – it is done like this.
Board mahogany sapele flater** gr.50mm cut into strip planes** gr.8,1mm. Planes striped and screwed assembly to the sheathing according to the direction in the hull, inserted into the existing layer in the teeth every third with an offset of 15-20 thickness (12-16cm). At the end of each 1/8 chamfer for better connection. After gluing, the screw holes studded and the plating riveted into the old holes in the stringers*** and also studded. All protected with deep penetrating epoxide (Wood Primer 12) And then applied 015 under antifouling… DONE****.
Three weeks of work with a sore neck and hands overhead. With a belt sander, router, circular saw, hammer, chisel, screwdriver and the indispensable angle grinder… over my head. This is not bragging, not complaining. Don’t misunderstand us! This is our work. You have to have a heart for it.
* 8mm is probably already a planka… but it’s not about nomenclature here
** The layout of the grain in the planking depends on the position of the plank in the log as it is sawn
*** In the Gift of Stettin the planking rests on the stringers and the frames are attached to them.
**** Still bottom transitions, sanding and a mass of “small” tasks that I did not mention.
